on the notion of citizenship:

American Possibilities
Hi folks—

I had the chance to catch up with an old friend Monday.

Barack and I met for lunch at Dog Tag Bakery in Washington, DC — a great local outfit that helps veterans and their families gain valuable entrepreneurial experience and earn a certificate in business administration. They also make a mean ham sandwich.

I wanted to share a little bit about what Barack and I talked about — because I think it's pertinent for all of us: We had a nice little discussion about what it means to be a vital participant in democracy.

And how it starts with exercising your God-given right to have a say. It starts with voting.

Join Barack and me, and millions of your fellow citizens, and make a commitment to vote this fall.

It's about more than that, too. It's helping your elderly neighbor out with her trash. Reading out loud at a children's hospital. Helping to clean up your local highway in your free time. Or even simply patronizing a local business doing good work for the community — a place like Dog Tag Bakery.

Citizenship is a sacred duty — something we must live up to every day. Evident in how we treat each other, how and whether we stand up for each other — and yes, even in how we disagree with each other. It's about fellowship.

I know it seems like we're hopelessly divided — like we're stuck in a political death match that we just can't get out of.

But we're better than this.

I've always believed that we are strongest when we are One America.

Rich, poor, middle class. Black, white, Hispanic. Gay, straight, transgender. Folks like my family that came to this country a while ago, and the new immigrant coming today. My grandkids — and the Dreamer who sits next to them in the classroom.

That's who we've always been, and who we can become again.

Recommit to that founding principle, and let me know you'll vote this fall.

We'll be in touch along the way with reminders, and share some more of the leaders who are inspiring us all around the country.

But in the meantime, go say hello to your neighbor. I mean it. That's what this is all about.

Thank you.
