Emily, I’m writing today with an important update on the DNC’s work to protect voting rights. This is a longer email, so here’s the gist: President Trump’s new executive order directs the federal government to build an eligible voter list for each state, so it can decide who gets to vote by mail — and instructs the US Postal Service not to return ballots for anyone not on this list. We won’t let that happen, so we’re taking the Trump administration to court. Please chip in using this link to help power our fight against Trump, in court, and on the ground. Now let’s get in the weeds: President Trump’s executive order requires the Department of Homeland Security to compile lists in each state of the people it thinks are eligible to vote. Then it directs the US Postal Service not to carry mail ballots from anyone not on the list back to local election officials. If the list is out of date or inaccurate, you may be out of luck. In the end, President Trump wants to pick and choose who can return a ballot by mail. But, Emily, President Trump doesn’t run American elections. The President has no authority to set the rules for our democracy. Congress and the states have that power — no one else. The Trump administration has tried to interfere with voting rights before, and we’ve beaten them time after time. We won’t let President Trump succeed in this desperate bid for power — and we won’t let him win the midterm elections either. This case could fundamentally change voting rights in America, and the Trump administration is sure to take it all the way to the Supreme Court. The DNC is taking on Republicans on all fronts — in the courts, on social media, and on the ground — to ensure that we elect Democrats who will stand up to these aspiring authoritarians.
