Emily, it’s DNC Vice Chair Malcolm Kenyatta. This weekend, people across the nation will be celebrating and honoring Juneteenth. This day is a commemoration of when the last groups of enslaved people in Texas finally got word of their emancipation on June 19, 1865 — two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863. Juneteenth is a celebration of Black resilience, community, and the enduring struggle for freedom. It is also a reminder that liberation must be fought for, continually defended, and expanded. Let me be honest: The Supreme Court’s decision in Louisiana v. Callais has jeopardized some of the rights that Black and Brown Americans fought so hard to have acknowledged. Since this decision, we’ve seen states like Louisiana, Tennessee, Alabama, and Florida rush to redraw their maps to silence Black and Brown voices and effectively rig November’s elections in Republicans’ favor. In Mississippi, the Republican governor is urging the legislature to redraw its legislative, state supreme court, and congressional lines before the 2027 elections, when state legislative seats will be on the ballot. My friends, this is a moment for us to choose. A moment where young people are asking whether or not they’ll inherit a world where the color of their skin determines the trajectory of their lives. A moment for us to stand up and fight for change, because injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. At this moment, when our hard-fought rights are under attack, your support is more important than ever. In this moment, we need to stand together and not give in to the cynicism of those who say we can’t win again. Let’s get to work. Thank you for your dedication to helping our country, Malcolm Malcolm Kenyatta If you gave recently via check or mail, our system may not have yet processed your gift.
