Emily, my name is Justin Pearson, and I just became the Democratic nominee for Congress in Tennessee’s 9th Congressional District. I won my primary exactly 61 years after President Johnson stood alongside Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Reverend Ralph Abernathy, John Lewis, and Rosa Parks and signed the Voting Rights Act into law. Today, that same Voting Rights Act has been severely undermined by the Supreme Court, and the Tennessee state legislature has taken advantage of those weaker protections by separating Memphis and Shelby County, our only majority-Black congressional district, into thirds. The political dilution and deprivation of our rights is happening in our lifetime. It’s a blatant attempt to keep people like me out of power. This election is about a vision for 61 years from today. Not just for my district, but in races across the country. In 74 days, we will face a choice: We can start to build an America that reflects the true spirit of generosity and kindness that I have always known our communities to have. Or, we can let our country continue to be permanently scarred by two more years of unchecked power for Donald Trump. By two more years of chaos and cruelty. By two more years of the systematic dismantling of our fundamental rights and freedoms. Emily, we can’t let that choice be made for us on Election Day. We can’t sit around and wait for Republicans to have an epiphany

For a lot of people, the American dream has become the American myth.
That is an unacceptable reality. So we need to be focused on results to reinvigorate that dream. And we’re going to have to toughen up a bit.
We cannot sit around and wait for Republicans to have an epiphany.
People’s rent can’t wait for that. People’s healthcare bills can’t wait for that. People’s childcare costs can’t wait for that.
We have to act now so Democrats can regain control in November and start the important work of rebuilding our country to meet the needs of the people.

Their answer? Silence. So we’re taking them to court to demand a response. This is our chance to sound the alarm and get information for the American people. If DOJ and the FBI try to get a warrant to seize ballots, they’ll be trying to silence your voice before your vote is counted and to undermine the certification of the election. Emily, if the DOJ goes to a magistrate judge to ask for a warrant to seize ballots, we won’t have a chance to respond before the warrant is signed and the raid begins.
