BREAKING: Supreme Court strikes down Virginia maps

Emily, I have some bad news... Just a few weeks ago, Virginia voters said loud and clear that they wanted to redraw their congressional districts to offset gerrymandering in Republican states. But today, the Virginia Supreme Court struck down the new map — silencing the voices of Virginians — all while Republican states redraw their maps to create more and more red districts with no consequences. I won’t sugarcoat it: This is bad. Democrats will need to come out of the midterms with a House majority so large that Republicans can’t overturn it with challenges. Emily, the truth is that we were counting on these seats — and now we may need to take back the House without them. We’re not giving up — we are going to win this November, with or without these seats. We’re just going to have to work even harder to do it. BREAKING: Republicans in Tennessee have officially passed a new congressional map, carving up the state’s only majority-Black district just days after the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act. Emily, this redistricting plan is exactly what Trump and his hand-picked Supreme Court wanted when they handed down the Callais decision last week. With Louisiana v. Callais, the U.S. Supreme Court gutted the core requirement of the Voting Rights Act to protect minority opportunity districts — overturning decades of precedent and undercutting a core victory of the Civil Rights Movement. Callais opened the door for states to dilute Black, Latino, AANHPI, Native American, and Alaska Native representation — especially in the South, where Republicans have made clear they want to split the voting power of minority communities. And that’s exactly what Republicans in Tennessee did today. This is another shameful power grab by the GOP in their attempt to rig the midterms, as Trump scrambles to hold on to the GOP’s House majority. We cannot let them win.
