Emily — it’s Ken Martin. I was just on the ground in Phoenix, Arizona to register new Democratic voters with our When We Count Fellows. I flew across the country to be in person with our Fellows because I truly believe every single conversation we have (and every voter we register) between now and November matters. That’s the whole reason why we launched When We Count: To make sure that potential voters in battleground states hear from passionate young Democrats in their own communities. To close the gap in voter registration with real connections. To organize everywhere so we can win anywhere. Watching our team at work was genuinely inspiring: Fellows are meeting young people where they already are using third spaces — cafes, concerts, rideshares, thrift stores — you name it. We’re also organizing online through Instagram, Snapchat, Discord, and group chats because the bottom line is: If young people are there, so are our Fellows. Emily, there’s been some movement in our lawsuits against the Trump administration, so I wanted to fill you in. Back in March, we sued the Trump administration under the Freedom of Information Act to demand transparency about their plans for the midterm elections after the Trump administration flat-out ignored our FOIA requests. Now, the Trump administration and their lawyers are trying to dodge accountability again, filing a motion to strike parts of our lawsuit. They’re refusing to fully answer our suit and calling our allegations “fanciful” and “impertinent.” I want to be clear, Emily: We’ve got our foot on the gas, and we’re not letting up. The American people deserve to know if the Trump administration is going to attempt to stop their voices from being heard this November. This isn’t our only suit against the administration. Far from it. One more example: We’re also suing to stop President Trump’s new executive order that directs the federal government to build an eligible voter list for each state and instructs the US Postal Service not to return mail ballots for anyone who isn’t on this list. We have a hearing in that case today. While our legal team works every day to protect our nation's fundamental principles in court, the DNC is fighting back in every arena. We have organizers on the ground in battleground states registering new Democrats to vote. Teams of experts working to raise money and invest it where it matters most. Communications and social media teams are working to make sure that in big moments, Americans are hearing from Democrats. To continue all of this work, we need someone else: you. “Disciplined and ruthless.” Emily, that’s how the chairman of the RNC described their plan for a multimillion-dollar “election integrity” push ahead of this year’s midterms. They plan on hiring directors in 17 states to recruit poll workers, poll watchers, and election observers to be their eyes and ears on “every vote cast” on Election Day. This is building off the “success” of their 2024 operation, in which they recruited more than 230,000 volunteers in key states for poll watching, among other duties. Don’t let their branding fool you, this is the opposite of election integrity — it’s a direct threat to the security of our elections. Emily, Republicans know their agenda is historically unpopular and that Democrats’ winning streak this year could foreshadow a landslide in November. So they’re planning to have hawk eyes on the polls to ensure things go their way. Democrats are committed to making sure this doesn’t impact anybody’s ability to vote. We’re working around the clock across the country to organize, register voters in key states, and distribute resources to the campaigns and state parties that need them most.
