What’s on my mind this Mother’s Day

Emily — One day, when I was teaching writing at a community college, a student of mine came to class with her four-year-old. The moment I locked eyes with my student, I could see her distress, and I knew exactly what happened: Her babysitter had fallen through but she couldn’t afford to miss the class. She set up her son with a box of crayons and some paper in the corner of the room, and I tried to give her a smile when I saw her looking at him nervously — praying he’d make it through. That’s just what moms do. If the carefully-planned matrix of work, and school, and drop-offs and pick-ups falls apart, you just figure it out. This year, more and more moms are having to figure it out. They’re making difficult decisions about their finances, the safety of their families, and their futures — because the chaos of the Trump administration is making life harder for everyone. There’s something that fills me with hope, though: All of you. People like you are turning out in record numbers to elect leaders who will help us make real progress. In Virginia, Governor Abigail Spanberger is fighting to make life easier for mothers through programs like paid family and medical leave. In New Jersey, Governor Mikie Sherrill declared a State of Emergency on utility costs, and her administration is already working to lower costs for working families. It’s in the spirit of motherhood to fight for a better world, to want to leave our children with more than we had, to lift them up. As a mom, there’s nothing more heartening than watching you all fight for a better world, and knowing that we are all in that fight together. So this Mother’s Day, I’m writing to say thank you for continuing to fight — on behalf of myself and so many other mothers. I appreciate all that you do,
