After 25 years in uniform and another 5 in the United States Senate, I never imagined I'd have to do something like that. Hegseth has left me no choice. When he censured me and threatened my rank and retirement, he came after what I earned over 25 years — and attempted to chill the free speech rights of every retired member of the military alongside me. If Hegseth isn't stopped, our longest-serving military veterans will have to live with the constant threat that they could be deprived of their rank and pension years, even decades, after they leave the military if they say something he doesn't like. I'm not going to sit by and let that happen. So, I sued Hegseth. And now, we wait and see what the court decides. In response to the Democratic Party's lawsuit, a federal judge permanently blocked parts of Trump's illegal executive order in which he tried to make it harder for members of the military and married women who have changed their name to vote. In the words of the judge, "our Constitution does not allow the President to impose unilateral changes to federal election procedures." We couldn't agree more. Emily, this decision is a win for democracy and for the American people. But we also know that the fight doesn't end here. Donald Trump could appeal this decision, and he'll certainly continue working with Republicans in Congress to try to restrict Americans' voting rights in 2026 and beyond.
