Let me explain why we have to respond before it’s too late.
Industry leaders and many AI researchers in their own labs warn that the frontier of artificial intelligence is advancing at an alarming speed.
A slowdown is critical in order to ensure AI serves the public interest. We should explore this technology’s potential to produce life-saving benefits in fields like medicine, but we also must set up sensible guardrails so that AI does not completely escape human control and endanger our safety and collective future.
This demands the leadership of the United States government. Yet instead of stepping up to meet this critical moment, Congress has gone home early and Donald Trump is again lying to the American people.
We need a Congress that will regulate AI, not rubber-stamp Donald Trump’s self-serving agenda.
We need a Congress that works at an urgent pace to provide oversight for this technology, to ensure accountability, and to protect our wellbeing.
We need a Congress that will help the United States lead the world in developing AI technology even as we seek to impose common-sense safety standards.
We cannot trust that the president will do his job to protect America’s interests, so we need a House and Senate that will.
