Emily — I wanted you to be one of the first to hear the news: I'm running for governor of the state of Minnesota. This is a home-grown campaign, born in a moment like no other. I'm going to tell you why in a moment. I learned that from my family. I'm the daughter of a newspaperman and a proud union member teacher. My grandpa worked 1500 feet underground in the mines on the Iron Range, and he saved his money in a coffee can in the basement to send my dad to college. I wouldn't be where I am today without them. These times call for leaders who can stand up and not be rubber stamps of this administration. But who are also willing to find common ground and fix things in our states. I led my state's biggest prosecutors' office for eight years and then Minnesotans gave me the honor of serving as their United States Senator. I was ranked number one in the Senate for bipartisan bills and number three out of one hundred for getting bills passed into law. I will do my job without fear or favor. I've never shied away from taking on the powerful. That's what I did as a prosecutor. That's what I did as a senator. And that's what I will do as governor. I believe we must stand up for what's right. And fix what's wrong. I am running for every Minnesotan who wants to buy their first home, for every parent who wants a better world for their kids, for everyone who wants more affordable health care. I am running for every Minnesotan who wants to protect our democracy and get ICE and its abusive tactics out of the state we love. And I'm running for every student, farmer, dreamer and builder. Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth want to use the power of the White House and the Department of Defense to silence me because they don't like what I have to say.   | Emily, it's Mark. | Emily, Yesterday, I spent the day in my home state of Minnesota, and I wanted to share some photos and stories from our visit. For those of you who are on the ground in the Twin Cities, I hope that you are staying safe and warm. For those of you who are watching from afar, I hope this email can give you some insight into what things are like on the ground right now. First, we headed to the Minnesota DFL headquarters, where we had a conversation with my friends and former coworkers.  Meeting with my former team at the Minnesota DFL Party. And, last night, DFL candidates Shelley Buck and Meg Luger-Nikolai clinched victories in their respective Minnesota House District 47A and House District 64A races. With these victories, Minnesotans now have two more Democratic champions who will fight to lower costs, protect health care, and protect our community from federal overreach and violence. From there, we headed to the Capitol to catch up with my friend, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison. AG Ellison and I discussed how he is leading the charge to hold ICE accountable in the courts, and he shared what is giving him hope during these dark and difficult times. After my conversation with AG Ellison, my team and I volunteered at a Minneapolis church that is providing supplies to families who are scared of leaving their homes, for fear of being targeted by ICE. We dropped off food and helped receive and organize donations. The church was bustling with activity. There was a steady stream of cars dropping off donations, and people showed up from all over the city to volunteer. Two of the most requested items were diapers and baby formula.  Delivering supplies to families in need. Then, I was humbled to visit the memorial sites of both Renée Good and Alex Pretti. 
At the memorial sites for Renée Nicole Good and Alex Pretti, January 27, 2026. Renée Good and Alex Pretti's lives were taken far too soon. Both were valued members of their community here in Minneapolis. Both were labelled immediately as "domestic terrorists" by the Trump administration. That couldn't be further from the truth. Renée was a poet and a mother of three killed while monitoring ICE activity after dropping her kids off at school. Alex was an ICU nurse at the VA, who, before he was shot dead in the street, was helping a woman who was shoved to the ground by federal agents. Yesterday, my team and I paid our respects to these Minnesotans who embodied our values. We mourn their senseless deaths, and stand with all who have faced brutality at the hands of Trump's federal agents. This month of so much heartbreak and fear for Minnesotans has only steeled our resolve. But I also know we are not alone. The country is watching and with us. Trump may have thousands of federal agents, but we have our neighbors. And if we have learned anything from the movement in Minnesota, it's that there's strength and power in community, and our resistance makes a difference. On Monday, the news broke that Greg Bovino, the public face of Customs and Border Patrol who oversaw crackdowns in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Minneapolis, would be demoted and removed from that role. His removal would not have been possible without a successful public pressure campaign, both from folks on the ground in Minnesota and every single person raising their voices in opposition across the country. But our work is not yet done. While Bovino might be on his way out, we need to keep doing everything in our power to hold Donald Trump and his administration responsible for the campaign of cruelty and chaos. | Emily, What's happening right now is not normal. But, as we're sure you're aware, things haven't been normal since the beginning of the Trump administration. It's not normal to be governed by someone who has been convicted of 34 felonies and who demonstrates again and again how little he respects the rule of law. It's not normal for our fellow Americans to be under occupation in their neighborhood streets, threatened by federal agents with masks and guns. It's not normal for the federal government to be detaining, brutalizing, and murdering Americans in the streets for exercising their First Amendment rights — and then lying about it. None of this is normal. Trump's goal is to destroy faith in American institutions and the rule of law and plunge us into an authoritarian society. But we're not powerless, as long as we stand together. We saw a spark of hope amid the chaos in the protests in Minnesota on Friday, when tens of thousands of people braved temperatures as low as -20° Fahrenheit and took to the streets to demand an end to Donald Trump's crackdown in their city. That is the power of the people on full display. We are living in a pivotal moment in American history. And until Democrats win back Congress, its Republican leaders will continue to fecklessly allow Donald Trump's chaos. There will be no progress made on any of the issues affecting the American people. | Hi Emily, this is Dan Freeman, the DNC's Litigation Director. On Saturday, a federal immigration agent shot and killed Alex Pretti in Minneapolis. For the past three days, millions of Americans have watched eyewitness footage of the events and seen an American citizen assaulted by federal agents, driven to his knees, and then shot repeatedly. President Trump and his administration are trying to convince the public that Pretti posed a threat to agents' safety. Alex Pretti was an ICU nurse for the Veterans Administration. He was a helper and an everyday hero. The administration's repeated lies about his killing are at once horrifying and ludicrous. In the aftermath of this tragedy, Attorney General Pam Bondi sent a letter to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, tying the "chaos in Minnesota" to the state's refusal to provide sensitive personal information about Minnesota voters to the federal government. The Justice Department is demanding driver's license numbers, Social Security numbers, and voting history, as they collect information on every voter in the country. Emily, let me be clear. Neither this request nor the end goal of creating a national voter database is legal, and the Democratic National Committee won't stand for it. We have already filed briefs in five states fighting back against unlawful demands for state voter rolls, with more to come this week. We've also sent letters warning ten Republican-led states negotiating agreements with the Department of Justice — to provide voter files and purge voters when the DOJ tells them to — that these actions would violate federal law. And earlier today, I appeared in federal court in Oregon, where a judge had ordered the Justice Department to explain the relevance of Attorney General Bondi's letter to voter file requests around the country. We had already defeated President Trump's attempt to get California's unredacted voter file in federal court, and today the federal court in Oregon handed President Trump another defeat by dismissing the voter file demand. President Trump, Attorney General Bondi, Customs and Border Protection Commander-at-Large Greg Bovino, and other members of the administration are demanding compliance from American citizens, in the streets and in the polling booth. | Emily, This email is long, but it's important. Because it's about Minnesota. I hope you can take a moment to read the whole thing. This weekend, in Minneapolis, a federal immigration agent murdered Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse who cared for our veterans at the VA hospital. We all watched it play out from dozens of different angles, filmed by bystanders on their cell phones in the freezing cold. And despite the lies from the government, we all had the same takeaway: this was an execution. In Minnesota, we're known for being warm. Not the temperature, but the people. We take care of our neighbors, no matter where they're from or what they look like. We don't look away when someone is being harmed. We don't abandon each other. That's what Alex Pretti stood for. Alex was a caregiver. A neighbor. A loving son. A man who spent his life protecting others. And, in his final moments, he was doing it again: showing up, trying to protect people in his community. That's what patriotism looks like. Donald Trump, Stephen Miller, and all these guys in the White House don't know a damn thing about patriotism. Think about this. They want us in fear. They want to provoke. They want federal agents with guns and tear gas roaming the streets. They want to break into houses without legitimate warrants and to stop citizens from recording them. Frankly, I can't think of anything less American. On Saturday night, after Alex was murdered by federal agents, Trump's Attorney General Pam Bondi sent an extortion letter to my friend, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Let me paraphrase this letter. Pam Bondi basically said: give us sensitive personal information about Minnesota voters — driver's license numbers, Social Security numbers, party affiliations — or else ICE won't back off. Donald Trump has spent years trying to overturn election results, rig our politics, and fix the game for himself. He's deeply unpopular. So, in a midterm year where he finally stands to lose his grip on power, we should all be asking ourselves why he wants to take control of state voter rolls. For months, Donald Trump and his politically weaponized DOJ have attempted to force states like Minnesota to hand over their voter data. Their goal is to collect as much sensitive personal information as possible. They seek to hand that data to Homeland Security and build a national voter database, as part of their effort to take control of elections nationwide. Now, let me tell you about what we are doing to fight back. At my direction, the Democratic National Committee has assembled a team of lawyers to fight in court to protect voters and prevent the Trump administration from violating states' rights to run their elections. As we've seen in Minnesota, Donald Trump has no hesitation with using the federal government to trample our rights and inflict brutal violence on our people. We cannot allow him to take control of our elections. As part of that effort, the DNC has filed briefs in five states, fighting back against the DOJ's unlawful attempt to seize state voter rolls. And we have more to come this week. Additionally, earlier this month, the DNC sent warning letters to 10 states urging them not to agree to send their unredacted voter files to Trump's DOJ and immediately purge voters from the rolls when DOJ tells them to, as these actions would violate federal law. We've already had success stopping Trump in the courts: His DOJ lost its first attempt to obtain an unredacted voter file in California, and we expect a federal court in Oregon to hand him another defeat soon. Emily, Donald Trump and his administration think they can threaten and intimidate us into silence and compliance through violence and coercion. But they're wrong. The DNC will stand with local elected officials and with our states to fight like hell for our democracy. And to Donald Trump, Pam Bondi, Kristi Noem, and Greg Bovino, we have a message for you: Get ICE the hell out of Minnesota. Now. To everyone who has read this far, thank you for your time, your energy, and your efforts. Keep showing up. Keep caring. Keep standing up for one another.
