While there, I watched a clip from the movie of Dorothy and Toto with her trusty sidekicks: The Scarecrow, who needed a brain; the Tin Man, who needed a heart; and the Cowardly Lion, who needed courage. Emily, I was struck by how that sums up exactly what’s wrong with Washington, D.C. right now. Too many politicians in Washington have lost their minds. They’re not using their critical thinking skills to solve problems. They’re not thinking for themselves or their constituents; they’re doing what their president tells them to. Too many politicians have lost their hearts. They go to Washington and get too busy to listen to their constituents. They lose sight of why they ran for office and who they’re in D.C. to represent. And too many politicians have lost the courage to stand up to the president and say no. To refuse to vote for a bill that will take money out of the pockets of people back home and give it to billionaires. To stand up for what’s right, even if the president is going to bully you, primary you, or call you names. That is why we need to elect leaders who will have the heart, brains, and courage to stand up for what’s right, even when it’s hard. That means making massive investments in organizing, infrastructure, and turnout between now and Election Day. Emily, the end of this month is our last end-of-quarter deadline before Election Day.
