Hi Emily, today is Women’s Equality Day. We wanted to reach out this morning with some reflections about what that means to us. On this date, 106 years ago, the Nineteenth Amendment was enshrined in our Constitution, codifying women’s right to vote — but only some women. For millions of Black women and women of color, that right wouldn’t be won for several more decades. This recognition of a fundamental right was not simply handed down by a benevolent government — it was won by a group of trailblazing activists who envisioned a better future for American women and spent decades persevering through only partial progress to make it a reality. The ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment, and decades later, the passage of the Voting Rights Act, was the result of years of organizing, protesting, and civil disobedience in the name of a noble cause. In the decades since, generations of activists have continued fighting for the rights of their daughters, granddaughters, sisters, and nieces. Emily, women all over the country are still being discriminated against and marginalized by their government — especially with Donald Trump in the White House and his MAGA cronies in control of Congress. Trump and the GOP work every day to turn back the clock on women’s rights — whether that’s by functionally gutting the Voting Rights Act, slashing funds for reproductive health research, or working to put anti-choice extremists into power who would love nothing more than to enact a national abortion ban. It goes without saying that there’s a lot at stake this year — especially for women, their families, and their communities. Democrats across the country are fighting hard to make up for lost ground. And this year, we have the chance to flip both the House and the Senate and place a massive check on Trump’s power to continue enacting his destructive agenda. Emily, it’s up to us to fight right now. Progress isn’t promised, it’s hard-fought and hard-won. That’s exactly what the DNC is doing — fighting for communities across the country to have a government that envisions a brighter future for their communities. Thank you for fighting with us, The Democrats If you gave recently via check or mail, our system may not have yet processed your gift. We are appreciative and thank you greatly for your support. Emily, we’re building the largest midterm operation in DNC history to take back control of Congress this November, but we need your help right now. Your donation today will help fund our work to register new Democrats in battleground states, organize everywhere, and win everywhere. Text JOIN to 43367 Want to receive fewer emails? Click here.
